How about a Val with retractable landing gear and all the bombing gear removed?
Later versions had nearly 1300hp and 267mph speed clean with those large spatted wheels hanging out.
I suspect the fuel tanks are in the wing which might make it all a bit hard.
I said on March 10: "I would prefer a thing that looks a bit like a Val with retractable undercarriage, 20 mm forward-firing cannons and at least a defensive half-inch caliber. Also, an engine of 1600 hp or more."
Well, the bombing gear should not be removed. The task is not to beat a fighter by a bomber. The task is to create a single-engined bomber (Jeff above quotes two-engined ones) which is as hard as possible to be caught by a fighter, and able to show some serious response when involved in a fight. The fighter would still be the better fighter, but a bomber like this would increase the cost of success for the opponent.
