Agree that the SB-2 performance was outstanding when first introduced.

The problem with keeping it that way is best shown by the increase in performance of the Bf 109 which went from being a 280-290mph plane at 4000m in the 1937 B-1 to being a 340 to 350 mph plane at 5000m in the late 1938 E with the 601 engine.

It would have been hard to make that sort of performance jump with the SB-2.

The introduction of the also outstanding Tu-2 in late 41 represented a big increase in performance.

The introduction of the also outstanding Tu-2 in late 41 represented a big increase in performance.

I would consider the Pe-2 with its 360 mph. top speed more in the Mosquito range.
