Looking for information on F8F-1 War Emergency Power

Hello I am looking for additional information on the F8F-1 using the Pratt & Whitney R-2800-34W Double Wasp 18 cyl radial piston engine.
Is there any concrete evidence that the pilots were able to use WEP in the early F8F-1 and not only the later F8F-1B model?
In these two documents the WEP is listed but I can't find anything on the usage of WEP in the handbook besides "On entering Cockpit" - "WEP switch - OFF".

But no clear instruction when under what circumstanses and on which specific model WEP switch should and could be switched to ON?
If the F8F-1 R-2800-34W was able to use WEP how high was the the manifold pressure in Hg?

Was it also 70-75 Hg like on the F8F-1B?

Hello Magicool,

     Welcome to the forum. I hope you stick around awhile and enjoy yourself.

     A very interesting note on the Charateristics document in your post is the

2,750 hp. listing at S.L. for the F8F-1 on 1 March 1955. That is 250 hp. more

than the F8F-2 was cleared for in 1 September 1949 and definitely more than

the 2,380 hp./S.L. that the F8F-1 was cleared for on 1 June 1945. I can only

assume that this 2,750 hp. (70-75"Hg?) was a much later authorized restriction.

I do agree that this later setting is very likely as the R-2800 was one of the

most durable piston engines ever made (IMO). My belief is that if the -34W

was cleared for 70 "Hg it would have been used in both the -1 and -1B

Bearcats. Wow, that was a mouthful.

     I know that the water injection system was not installed in many early Bearcat

test vehicles during 1943 when it was being tested heavily. I do believe that

all F8F-1s that were working up to operational status in 1945 were fitted with

the water injection system (WEP).

     I suppose all of that doesn't help you much in finding your ultimate answers.

My knowledge of such is pretty much limited to the WW2 years where I chose

to focus my research.

Hey still interesting to hear.
It seems the pilots handbook is somehow incomplete in section 1 para. 3 g I found a description of the water injection control but it says instructions for F8F-1 series WEP are under section 2 para 112.
But section 2 para 112 only states that the water injection system for the F8F-2s needed further testing no word about the F8F-1s something is left out there.
Maybe lost when the documents were cleared for public trying to find this missing part.

Today is 2017 and many F8F owners still take off at 2,000 hp, at least initially. Since THEY are paying for the fuel, it quickly gets throttled back and to cruise power, but they STILL make great power on modern, 100 LL avgas, at nowhere NEAR the power potential of good avgas.

 

That comes from current fliers of F8F Bearcats. EVERYONE wants a tank (or more) of good fuel at Reno! My bet is the owners CAN get some good fuel if they want to pay for it. Too many good stories going around ...
