My dad flew the PB2Y-5H in the Pacific and I am now starting to research his career. He started out in PB4Ys flying anti submarine patrol along the US Atlantic coast. He was then transferred to the west coast and began flying PB2Ys and ended up in the PB2Y-5H. So where do I start to find out unit assignments etc? Also interested in how many of the 5Hs were produced and when they went into operation as well as the unit numbers. I do know that he flew his wounded Marine first cousin and next door neighbor off of Saipan, probably allowing him to survive the war.

Thanks so much and glad to be here!

Hi Gordon,

I hope your stay here is a long and pleasant one. Don't have a lot of time

right now, have to mow the lawn and then get ready for work tomorrow. I'll

see what I can dig up later. There are several knowledgeable people here.

Hope someone else can also pitch in.

Jeff :)

Thank you very much for this link. It appears as if VPB-4 was the sole unit to fly the 5H, and that that variant was not delivered until January of 45. Since my dad flew his wounded cousin off of Saipan might one assume that the -3 model was jury rigged to carry wounded back for medical treatment in the US? How might I go about finding out how many 5H models were produced?

Gordon,

The best breakdown of production numbers for the Coronado that I could find was at:
