The MIG-29 was the first Soviet fighter to appear at an airshow inside NATO territory: Farnborough in 1988!
As easy information and videos are to find on the web today it's almost forgotten that hose days Your experience of such things depended on a buddy who had a 20 time copied VHS-tape. I was such fortunate and remembers the airdisplay starting with a take-off with an unremarkable lift and sudden retraction of the gear - Amazing stuff for the average Joe who, as noticed, hadn't the amount of Youtube videos as reference :-o
Beside is the MIG-29 the only Soviet fighter wich have flewn under NATO colours due to the numbers inheritaged by Luftwaffe from DDR after the fall of the Iron Curtain!

It is!
But the '88 Farnborough video doesn't justify the take-off trick :-(
I've done some more 'easy surfing' to find an example and this is the best I've found:

But it's also possible to retract just a second too early:

Nice to read this again, however I recall some additonal stories from the Tornado-escort of the incoming MIG's - Anybody with a remembrance of such?

As I have surfed for the ansver simultaneously I've come past quite many other stories from the time.
One is that the brits had deployed a Canberra to shadow the MIG's simultaneously with the Tornados follow-by and using IR detectors in the hope of being able to asset the Russians fuel-amount thus calculating the consumption. But the cold war was obviously still in progress as the Russians did expect this and had filled the MIG's to the top in flight over the North sea!

Talking about Farnborough 1988 it seems to me that it was the flying debute for Dassault Rafale too :-/
And not to forget: The Rammstein disaster just two weeks before Farnborough =:-o
Busy year, 1988!
