Overview of SAAB Drakens in Finnish Air force service which were eventually replaced with F-18 Hornets.

Finnish Air Force would have liked to buy Drakens over the MiG-21 in 1961, but political and economic reasons prevented the Draken purchase to 1970.
Drakens were bought in multiple series during a time period of more than a decade. First aircraft from Sweden were received in 1972 (BS series trainers fighters), Finnish built XS series started to operate from 1974 and used Swedish F1's (FS in Finnish service) were received 1984. Finland also operated CS series trainers. The aircraft served until 2000 and went through multiple upgrades. These included upgrades in electronics and additional missile rails. The aircraft were also tested with Soviet R-13M missiles.

I really have an affection of the Draken and it is underlined by my sad feelings presented with the picture of the Scrapped one, wich I never have experienced around similar pictures of other planes :-o

The scrapped one is epitaph of small-minded officers.

This yellow Draken was painted by Lapland Air Wing staff on their own time and money, to celebrate the retirement of the Draken from Finnish AF. Because this was not ordered by superiors, they tried first to get these involved squadron members court-martialed from using government property or destroying FDF property but these accusations were found unfounded. Thus it was ordered to be the first one scrapped...

:-o
Such idiocy have to be widespread!
Is it OK I copy the pictures for telling the story other places?

Since the decoration is a bull and not Lapland-typical reindeer, what is the story of the bull??

It is OK, only the last one is "mine" (and as such, nothing special, the monument is a public place, Kuorevesi, Halli, Finland, previous home of Finnish AF test flight center), the others are from internet-sources.

As for the bull.

It is not a bull, it is a wisent. It originates from Finnish AF personnel visit to Warsaw in 1941 to get the Dornier Do17Z's which Reichmarschall Göring gave to Finland. The wisent was in the etiquette of Zubrowka vodka, and the Finns adopted it to Lelv 46 use. Currently it is the squadron insignia of HävLelv 11, which previously had Drakens and now has F-18 Hornets.

The yellow plane is DK-215 (cn 351308), first flight 6.2.1975 Halli, Paavo Janhunen. Last flight 16.8.2000 Rovaniemi. Scrapped and melted in August 2001.

The plane as monument is DK-201 (cn 351301), first flight 12.3.1974 Halli, K-G Liljeqvist. Name: "Kake". Last flight 16.5.2001. Jämsä, Halli memorial. Same place had first a DH Vampire, then Folland Gnat and now the Draken. This small town has Patria aircraft factory and had Finnish AF Test Flight Center.

I do it, I do it, yes I do it:
For long I've thought about making a posting: "Pinned Birds" in the Museum and Airshow subcatagory. Though only having the knowledge and inspiration to getting some of my nationals 'entrance displays' photographed I haven't got one of my own Yet.
But now I'll start-up the posting with Your DK-201 picture from Halli!
