Overview of SAAB Drakens in Finnish Air force service which were eventually replaced with F-18 Hornets.
Finnish Air Force would have liked to buy Drakens over the MiG-21 in 1961, but political and economic reasons prevented the Draken purchase to 1970.
Drakens were bought in multiple series during a time period of more than a decade. First aircraft from Sweden were received in 1972 (BS series trainers fighters), Finnish built XS series started to operate from 1974 and used Swedish F1's (FS in Finnish service) were received 1984. Finland also operated CS series trainers. The aircraft served until 2000 and went through multiple upgrades. These included upgrades in electronics and additional missile rails. The aircraft were also tested with Soviet R-13M missiles.
