An interesting article about the Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero, Type 0 Model 22, found in the 1970s in Papua New Guinea, that is being prepared to once again take to the skies of Japan to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II:

The text is incorrect. The Planes of Fame in Chino, CA, U.S.A. has an A6M5 Model 52 Zero complete with original Sakae 31 engine and Sumitomo propeller and it has flown several times in Japan. We have shipped it over three times for display and flew it on several occasions during the first two trips. The last trip saw it displayed at the museum where the first flight in Japan took palce and there was no runway, so we could assemble it and run the engine, but there was no place to take off from.

I'd say this new one will be the first Japanese-owned Zero to fly over Japan since WWII, not the first Zero.

Following unconfirmed reports, recently another Zero fighter was found in the New Guinea jungle. The government decided not to give it abroad, but to have it restored to airworthyness on location. A test pilot is already found:

Thank you for appreciating my archive, Jeff! :)

Sorry to say I have no pilot's license. So if you prefer to travel safely, it's better to keep ME out of the cockpit...

One shouldn't judge people too much for their clothing. Did you hear any bad news about airplane crashes from Papua New Guinea? No? So you see everything's alright there. ;)

BTW, it was WWII which made folks there becoming interested in aicraft. I mean having read after the war they decided to create an air force of their own. Better don't ask about the uniforms they chose!

Carlos,

Thank you for posting that information.

That would be awesome to see an A6M3 model 22 flying again. Just imagine how it would cut through the air with agility.

PS: I have decided to go for it and buy a couple of thongs. I need a co-pilot so, hey RT, what's your favorite color?
