UHHH Guys maybe the cannon slowed down the Luftwaffe fighters but wing racks also slowed down the P-51.......Plus don't you think n Allied pilot might just be a bit tired after a multi-hour mission?

Actually the racks on the P-51D model were special made for speed and slowed the aircraft down

only 6 mph. as compared to 8-10 mph. on other aircraft.

and No I don't think the Me 262 was the best jet from that era ,IMHO the P-80 was !!!! Though maybe ,maybe  a case maybe made for the Vampire ...

Once again this whole jet vs jet which on is best, all brings us to the one big question.

What do you want it to do. The Germans had to stop the heavies from bombing their

country. They slapped 4 x 30 mm cannons on a jet. This firepower alone put it at the

top of the jet list for bomber interception, PERIOD!

I understood that the Mk 108 was a very destructive cannon but had poor ballistics, so that it was difficult to get many shots on target from a fast closing Me 262. Of course, it didn't need many.

A point made drily by the late 'Winkle' Brown in his summary of German jets. At approach speeds there was very little time between being out of range (especially given the ballistics of the 30mm cannon and their tendency to jam under moderate 'g') and over the top of the bomber.

I agree but I was just pointing out that when this sort of talk arises the issue of P-51 wing racks slowing that plane down ,even just slightly , gets ignored.

In some cases though  the wing racks could slow the P-51 down by 8-11 MPH......http://www.wwiiaircr...ustangtest.html

Ahem....as I said, The racks on the P-51D were special low drag.

If you look over all the flight tests you will notice that the P-51D with

an external bomb rack on each wing was capable of 442 mph. at

26,000 ft. at critical high blower altitude using 67"Hg. You will not

find a P-51B on any of these tests that could match that speed at

any altitude using any amount of boost with the earlier wing racks.

Extremely observant, Jeff :)
