The Bucc carries fewer, mostly from the light rated underwing pylons, but offers greater performance with penetration at high Mach and low level instead of medium Mach and medium level.

Hi RA,

I have a feeling that the Buccaneer was originally designed as as a specialist nuclear bomber to attack Sverdlovs. One nuc carried in the rotating bomb bay and not a lot intended to go onto the wings.

The intention being to go as fast and low as possible. As I understand it very few modern fighters were able to catch Buccs going fast low down in the Red Flag exercises - at least before the wings fell off!

The Bucc was pretty strongly built but I don't know what speed it was stressed for. 580kts on the deck is pretty fast given that most fighters are stressed for 600-700kts at sea level. Wings are pretty small which limit how much you can put on them. I can't remember whether the Buccs in Desert Storm used external Paveways or internal.

The ones I saw back then had external stores fitted, Red, although as I recall the crabs mainly used them to designate targets for other types. Hth.

Hi Red, just found this, might help with your earlier question?

Terrible choice of music- "Here I go again on my own", (with my wingman, tanker support, AWACS, 'bout a thousand Allied aircraft and three wings of ground crew...)
