I am trying to locate a Rolls Royce Derwent engine Mk5 or 8. Possibly one of the other models (Mk.1 - 9).

I am hoping to be able to buy one. In any condition. I am looking to salvage parts from it.

This engine was used in the Gloster Meteor jet fighters amongst others.

Anyone got any leads? Preferably in the UK.

Thanks:D

Gonna be tricky, have you tried asking Rolls Royce themselves? Other than that there's an annual publication that comes out in the UK (I think it's either in association with or actually by Flypast) called Wrecks and Relics which details the condition of airframes and notification it they're scrapped. It might be worth consulting.

Out of interest what is it for? Are you lucky enough to have a Meteor you're working on? Or do you just want one huge blowtorch?

I just want to salvage a bunch of parts from it. The combustion chamber inter-connectors and combustion chambers.

there's one about 150m from me - but it is a cherished possession of our Physics Dept.

If you want bits you are going to have to look at the market as most of these will be in museums ... and not for sale. Try placing an ad in 'The Aeroplane' which has a column for people looking for bits. Don't like your chances.

Has the one in your Physics department been opened up and disassembled etc? I wonder if you would be able to photograph some parts for me which would at least verify that it is indeed this model of engine I'm looking for.

Is it the Mk 5 or 8 you have there?

If you think you would be able to help me out please email me kurtyboy@blueyonder.co.uk

Thanks,

From memory there is a cutaway RR Derwent in the foyer of the engineering deprtment of the University of Tasmania.

One of the lecturers there (or he was there during my time) works for, or did work for, Rolls Royce. Classes I took of his were aerodynamics and turbomachinery.....

Anyway, like the others I am intrigued as to what you intentions are with the engine.

Have you considered contacting IWM Duxford or RAF Cosford? If memory serves both have a large collection of engines. The ones of Duxford being more in pieces with a view to restoration, Cosford being for complete/cutaway displays.
