Hi WarBirdMan,

a request on luftarchiv.de resulted that the spectacular shotdown happened on July 14th, 1944, over the Hungarian capital Budapest. 5 crew members had bailed out.

There is a picture in Robin Neilland's 'The Bomber War' of a B17 that has made it back to a UK airfield with similar damage (though not as bad) as a result of a mid air collision - most of the nose forward of the cockpit is gone, although the chin turret is still there.

The bombardier and engineer had baled out beofre the pilot rescinded the order.

Doesn't say when it happened or what happened to the other aircraft.

I've seen pictures of a B-17 damaged in the manner you describe although in instance I've seen the bombardier and navigator can't really have been considered to have bailed out, unless you count "bailing out" in various directions simultaneously and in many, many separate pieces.

This B-17 too made it back to the UK, I believe the pilot was awarded a galantry medal as he basically had to navigate himself without a map and so saved his entire remaining crew from death or capture.
