Hi!

I was wondering... I can't seem to find any good info on early war (BoF) German Torpedo planes. Anyone got a clue? lol

I know the He115, SM79 and the Ju87D-4 was carrying fish, but wich one of them were active during the BoF? Or the most used during the whole war?

Thanks :)

The reason you can't find any early war German torpedo planes is because there weren't any. Although later on the Germans adapted a number of planes to carry torpedoes that were around in 1939/40, the Luftwaffe did not possess air-launched torpedoes until 1941 or 1942.

For anti-shipping operations at that time the Luftwaffe relied on dive-bombing as the prefered method of attack.

Hope this helps.

Luftwaffe flew its first torpedomission against some destroyers the 7th of November 1939 (no hits) and Hitler stopped all activity with torpedoes in the Luftwaffe on the 28th of November 1939. Luftwaffe started to work with torpedoes again in November 1940 and flew its next missions shortly after. II./KG 26 flew two sorties against the Royal Navy the 17th of March 1941.
