Project: Codename V3.0
Objective: An online strategy game accurately depicting the world during the period 1938 to 1945. Maps, units and required player decisions will be as close to the period as possible.
Platform: A browser based game more akin to hex-based bored games than the 3d ‘shooters’ of the current modern era.
Target audience: Players who prefer technical accuracy, intellectual stimulation and a community of like minded individuals.
Introduction: “Codename V3.0” hasn’t even got a name. “V3.0” is a development title until it can be christened correctly.
I originally conceived of the idea after previously working on a former online game, which then folded when the original designer grew bored and moved on. Suddenly inundated with spare time, I began to explore such titles as World War II online and Superpower.
Fascinated with the subject matter and itching to put some of my few talents to task, it suddenly struck me one day that such a game, with such scope, does not exist: A *free* strategy game, based in the WWII era, accurately depicting the people, troops, units and world during this time.
Partly a hobby, partly an obsession and certainly a homage to those incredible souls who lost their lives during such a dark time, I hope to elevate this concept to more than just a ‘game’; with guidance, community input and by listening to ‘those who know’, I hope to provide the tools through with others may shape the strategy experience that they would like to see.
V3.0 is at an extremely early stage – mostly conceptual with a great deal of research – and it was my initial instinct to progress somewhat further before making this draft. However, upon reflection, I felt that a little input at the early stages could help shape the simulation and build a solid foundation.
Programmatically I have V3.0 covered – likewise with hardware, bandwidth and etc. However, there are several key areas I would like to throw open to general input.
I would like to describe the general concept and ideas, and have someone offer an opinion and possible alternative ideas. I would like to be able to ask generalized questions and have someone knowledgeable offer a reply. I will need to be able to ask what a strategy player would like to see in such a game, and have sensible, logical and interesting angles presented to me.
To this end, I’m looking for anyone – with or without gaming experience – who could possibly be interested in being part of the development of an online strategy game based in the WW II era.
No ‘work’ per-se is required, just healthy input and advice.
At this stage, historical knowledge, information on good resources or ideas on what should be represented in the game are needed.
If this general idea ‘tickles your fancy’, I would like to encourage you to write to me at Kolyana@bellsouth.net, at which point I will respond with considerably more detail and an outline of how I see development progressing and the input that will be required at each stage.
Please note: Effective October 16th thru 25th I will be out of the country and unable to respond to email. *ALL* emails will be responded to in time, however and your patience is appreciated.
Moderators: This is strictly a non-profit project aimed at bringing in potentially interested parties ‘on the ground floor’ – hopefully building a strategy game that the future players would like to see online.
If, however, this post is against forum rules, you have my deepest and most sincere apologies; please delete it as you wish.
