Registration F4U-1 crashed near Rabaul Jan.20, 1944

Maybe you can help me to find the registration of the F4U-1 Corsair who was crashed near Rabaul on January 20, 1944 in WWII Pacific?
The pilot of that plane was Maj.M.R.McCown, he was on his way back to the airbase when he was shot down.
The plane and the body where discoverd.
I hope that someone of the members help me to find this information.

There were three VMF-321 F4U-1's lost over Rabaul on 20 Jan 1944, BuNo's 17914, 55835, and 17448. McCown, whom I believe at the time was a captain, was in 17448. The other two pilots were 1LT R H Brindos and 1LT R W Marshall, respectively.
