With this lovely new board we have the ability to upload an image to use as an avatar, and a few of us have already.

Noticing that Lightning has not, as yet, uploaded an avatar I thought we might make some suggestions.

This suits Lightning because, well, it's a Lightning! But it also looks menacing and like it is on the attack!

You are seriously going to start the first ever flame war of this thread.

Having said that, I support your choice of picture!

Why would there be a flame war?

Just an excuse to post pictures (mainly of P-38s, of course)!

Hi Wuzak,

I really appreciate your effort here! The photos that you and our other colleagues have posted are just great! I've enjoyed them all. Some I've seen, others not, but all are appreciated.

One question: Are there any copyright issues associated with using such photos as avatars?

Best regards to you and all the others,
Lightning

I must admit, I could not suppress a chuckle when I saw Kutscha's contribution to this thread. It just goes to show that the old boy really does have a sense of humor after all. Since he extended the courtesy of submitting his suggestion, it is only right that I reciprocate.

Allow me to suggest the following aircraft, the illustrations of which would be best suited to Kutscha's demeanor:

A hot air balloon,

or a large airship, circa the 1930s, that had as its most prominent feature a huge gasbag,

or, and perhaps the most appropriate of all, the V-1 "Buzz Bomb"--often inaccurate, made a lot of noise, and wasn't very swift.

I'm scared to ask what you might suggest for me now!:D

So, do you have a preferance yet, or should we keep suggesting pictures?

Lightning

Hi Ricky,

As to whether the postings should continue, I could look at them all day without getting bored!

As to a preference, I'm hesitant to select one over the others because they're all (well, almost all ) so very good.

As to what I'd suggest for your avatar; I'm thinking, I'm thinking!

Regards,
Lightning

Hi Lightning.

The answer is....I don't have a clue. Since you are not using it for financial gain...any copyright experts here?

I suppose that if there was an issue I shouldn't have posted the images at all.

Now, anybody got their own photos of Lightnings? I was going to take an awesome photo of Glacier Girl at Duxford last year but at the last moment it was stopped from making the trip for some trivial reason like engine failure.

My avatar was taken at the Duxford show. And the great thing about avatars is that they can be loaded from your local drive.

Another Lightning to view. This one crash landed off Wales after running out of fuel in shallow water. It was recently rediscovered but has been covered up again as you can easily walk to it and take pieces off it.

The answer is....I don't have a clue. Since you are not using it for financial gain...any copyright experts here?

Its usually not a problem unless its from a published source, in which case the source should be given and the picture resolution kept fairly small.

Love it!!

I only worry about what's going to happen when you guys get around to me.... or even better, round to RTF!

Not too sour to thank you for the great link. Very nice. Lots of detail. The P-38L-5 is my favorite variant.

Hi Red Admiral,

Thanks for the pic. I've red about this Lightning wreck. An outfit named "TIGHAR" out of New Jersey was called in to possibly salvage it for restoration. The team took that photograph with a camera attached to a kite!

It is good that the sand once again covered the wreck. It prevents scavengers from causing further damage before future plans are finalized.

Hi Corsarius,

Quoting you:
"I only worry about what's going to happen when you guys get around to me.... or even better, round to RTF!"

You and RTF, being two of the oldest members of this lash-up, know that we're all fair game, and no one is safe. That's part of the fun and what makes this forum and its members the best of the best.

Lightning

oh yes, lightning. That's why it's fun. And, being an old member, I do indeed tremble. I think that some of those lightning shots (particularly the head-on shot) are awesome. Say what you like, it's a very photogenic bird.

Hi Corsarius,

While we're on the subject of avatars, I remember that you had a neat picture of Baron Von Munchausen riding his famous cannon ball. What ever happened to it (the picture)? With your being an Me 163 "Komet" enthusiast, it was quite appropriate--dangerous to fly, but devastating to the enemy when everything worked right. It also took someone with the Baron's temperment to fly the Komet. :)

Lightning

Yes, I know the one. Hopefully I still have it somewhere. I thought it was better than the KG400 squadron logo of 'vie ein floh, aber oho!'

*edit* Found it! I thought I lost it when I had a colossal computer crash earlier this year and the reformat wiped out 3 years of photos, video, university assignments, and a research paper I had started in my spare time.

Fortunately, this one was on my old backup disc. Thanks for the tip, Lightning.
