Cunliffe-Owen made an OA.1, but I have never heard of the OA.3.
So ... I'm curious, too. :)

British Secret Projects Fighters and Bombers 1935-1950 by Tony Buttler describes the Cunliffe-Owen only as O.5/43 and says:

Maybe it has been completely lost in time.

If you can find a copy then 'British Aircraft Specifications File' by K J Meekoms is very good.

Quoting from Buttler again:
quote:The initial design stemmed from Specification M.7/36 of 8th September 1936 which described a torpedo spotter reconnaissance plane. This document was later cancelled but a replacement, 41/36, was produced in February 1937 to allow the project to be completed. It appears that no competition was forthcoming from any other company and the prototype [Fairey Albacore], L7074, made its maiden flight on 12th December 1938

The Armstrong Whitworth AW 29 was the rival to the Battle for that contract.

Dudes! Me want pictures!
The Fairy Albacore was pile of dung compared to the airplane it was to replace. Ol' String Bag soldiered on, past expectations.
...a similar story to the U.S. Navy's SBD vs SB2C

Swordfish -Great, ugly beast!

Albacore -Not too good at all...

Many a flat-top went to the bottom after a visit from a well flown Dauntless.

This humdinger was little too much and a little too crappy to be heralded as a success. It did inspire the creation of the Skyraider though.

The Skyraider... A very fat-rear-ended-airplane. But a good 'n!
...and that motif on the tail of this example is so cool, I think I'll have it tatooed on my neck! HA!
